making a basement where a basement wasn’t

Some of the more extreme home renovations is not up but down, digging out a basement where only a crawl space was before. You can’t help wonder about the logistics and planning that must happen when this is done. Not only do you have to support all floors but the old foundation or sometimes even stone support as you pass the base and go below.

JLCOnline site has images from one such project…

In his August 2008 article, author Danny Feig-Sandoval describes how his company dug out the crawlspace of an Atlanta home and replaced it with a full basement without disturbing the house’s existing brick foundation. The extra 1,000 square feet of living space contains a media room, a bedroom, and a 3/4 bath. In this slide show, we show more details from the process plus finished shots of the completed project.
