Felder: format-4 kappa 40 panel sawFelder of Ontario is having a huge sale on some Felder Kappa saws and other machines. For example this Format-4 Kappa 40 panel saw saves you $4100! Let’s not forget that these are probably the Rolls Royce of woodworking equipment but when you consider all you get and the quality, the price can be justified. The thing even scores it before it cuts, and if you take a look at the larger, and of course more expensive, units… ouf! Shapper and everything comes with the 500 - 900 series.

If you aren’t too familiar with Felder, you might want to check out some of their videos here. But be careful, temptation can be expensive.

Get more details on the sales here… (Especially the “All Arounder” video).

Woodworking: Adjustable Taper Jig

I have a flat roof, well that’s what the city calls it, but everyone that owns a house like this knows that flat is not flat at all, it’s tapered in just about every angle possible. My second problem is that I like skylights, lets the light in all over the place and gives an open feeling to just about any space.

So when I add one, it’s often a dance with all kinds of angles to get the roof lined up with ceiling which is also on a slant. It’s quite a process which I’m getting better at but every so often I mess up or scratch my head as to how I’m going to cut something without ending up… on a slant myself.

This really cool adjustable tapered jig project from the editors of Woodsmith and ShopNotes just landed in my mailbox, and just wanted to share. I mean the fast way to all of this is to buy a jig but building one yourself can sometimes lead to new insights and even modify to adapt to other types of cuts.

Some of the more extreme home renovations is not up but down, digging out a basement where only a crawl space was before. You can’t help wonder about the logistics and planning that must happen when this is done. Not only do you have to support all floors but the old foundation or sometimes even stone support as you pass the base and go below.

JLCOnline site has images from one such project…

In his August 2008 article, author Danny Feig-Sandoval describes how his company dug out the crawlspace of an Atlanta home and replaced it with a full basement without disturbing the house’s existing brick foundation. The extra 1,000 square feet of living space contains a media room, a bedroom, and a 3/4 bath. In this slide show, we show more details from the process plus finished shots of the completed project.
