www.rackemmfg.com online catalog image

Here’s [www.rackemmfg.com] a company that offers harder core racks then what I could find at my local hardware store. The applications are mostly enclosed or open trailer racking but it’s often the better stuff since you can fold in the hook when not in use in regards to saving a little space if that’s an issue. You can check out their online catalog here…

Just double check though, some confusion as to what racks fold up and lack of details on the site. It might be that they have two models, folding and non-folding.

I put up a video of a water cutter a while back. Well equally impressive is a laser cutter, shown in this video of the making of a YouTube sign. If you watch closely you will notice the support grid under has been chewed my all the laser passes. Laser cutters simply direct a high powered laser, which you don’t want to test with your finger for sharpness, into a material and either melts or vaporises it to make it’s cut. This one here is simply a two axis, but 6 axis are also manufactured where they can cut around curves of say something like a cast iron piece.

So why doesn’t everyone have one (or why don’t I have one)? Well they use a hell of a lot of power, but the savings are still good as they never require bits, sharpening and cut with less material loss (that mean is very small)! There are many different types of lasers used in the industry of cutting, one of the interesting options many offer is pulsating or fixed beam, consider cutting a hole through something thick as they save time. If a fixed beam were use the heat generated could probably melt or vaporise much more then what was planned. So by using a pulse, taking a little longer, provides for heat dispersion when making holes.

You can check out the whole making process since they use the same laser cutter to also slice through plastics. See the whole video series here…

Not working today? Tools collecting dust? The girlfriend distracting you? Well why not pretend you are busy and learn something at the same time! Introducing Lazy Learn Something Sunday Tool Talk, or better, LLSSTT to make it sound even more like work or professional technical course like related.

During the week I’ll try to hunt down the newest and best sites for learning stuff about construction and tools and post it up early Sunday.

So as our first cool site with tons of stuff is by Ace Hardware, they have a bunch of flash presentations explaining all kinds of things like architect scales and why cement isn’t concrete and even how to build a dog house… which is probably where you’ll be living soon if you sit down in front of a computer all day while the girlfriend doesn’t get the attention she deserves.

Ooooooo, I get so many bad ideas when I see one of these work! These machines use a find high pressured water jet to cut stainless steel. The design is loaded onto a computer which then controls the movement of the cutter head. They can then simply adjust the size of the piece to anything they want. Check it out.

Sunitec - snapshot of Portable Hydraulic Magnetic Drill

Magnetic drill I’m sure you have heard about, clamp to metal using a magnetic base but the more extreme ones use hydraulic or pneumatic drives to allow them to work in the most extreme conditions such as underwater. Pictured here is the HB-4400 from Sunitec, the manufacturer claims…

Model HB-4400 is ideal for drilling holes up to 2-1/16″ dia. in industrial, construction, marine and mining applications. Hydraulic motor is safe for underwater use.

Manually operated permanent magnet with rachet control has holding strength of 1300 lbs.

I have to admit it’s quite an impressive tool. More pictures including diver using can be be had here…

Lee Valley - Double Locking Extra Heavy-Duty Slides

If your building yourself an industrial drawer, like 400 lbs industrial! Check out Lee Valley Double-Locking Extra-Heavy-Duty Slides here… they offer them from 18″ all the way up to 48″ with 3 steps in between. An idea here: I was thinking of something like this to hold my power tools, in a drawer, so they don’t get covered in dust, right now I shelf them and it’s hell when the dust is all over the place. Just never found the right slides to hold the weight.
