Ever needed something that gave you the angle of something based on level measurements? I built this cedar skylight for the house last year, well it’s still not all polished up, but the angles on the upper section were quite complex and spent quite a bit of time using my old college math skills… or rather trying to remember them. This product from CH Hanson is a square with a pivot hinge, you can locate the exact angle of a roof pitch without having to make a whole bunch of measurements for COS… or is it SIN… guess it’s back to my old notes. Here’s a direct link…
The Pivot Square features three UV resistant vials that quickly and easily determine roof pitches and angles, indicate grade, facilitate miter cuts and allow for leveling and plumbing cuts. Additionally, the Pivot Square includes a locking mechanism that sets the square at a specific angle for accurately marking repetitive cut lines in either degrees or roof pitches. Pivot Square is extremely durable and made from finest machined aluminum alloy.
They say you can never have enough bar clamps (or pipe clamps), especially when I forget them outside in the rain. Well Lee Valley, in part of its 30th anniversary, is offering a set of 10 bar clamps for $65 (US). If you want longer then 25″, they also have 10 49″ for $85 (US). You can get more details on Lee Vallley site right here…
I live in town and have to share my workshop with a jeep… ya, it’s a garage. I was looking for a type of dust collection system but not something that takes up tons of place, so it came to mind that I could use a powerful shop vacume, sitting on a base sort of, and run a few tubes from it. I’ve been hunting around and no one seems to promote a shop vacuums with that kind of setup, you know, like offer all kinds of tube lengths and Y attachments etc. So I’ve been looking around and I’m kind of interested in a ShopVac, I like the silence considering it would be on for some time and g-friend is still sleeping in at 5am. I’m still shopping but if you have any suggestions or ideas let us know.
The Bosch speedwave(tm) has this S-shaped wave pattern that reduces heat. You can put this puppy right on a skill saw or a grinder to cut cured and reinforced concrete, roofing tile, brick and masonry materials, see an excerpt after the jump. More details can be found on the site.
I can’t tell you how many times I cut a large hole only to realize it had to be bigger, or needed to expand one to pass new plumbing. Prior to this the process was somewhat dangerous if you’ve ever seen me work with tools in tight places! Low and behold Bosch has this really nifty hole enlarger add on kit that works with the quick change. Check out the video
I saw a great review on www.thewoodwhisperer.com. Found it was really innovative the whole concept of this little compact router. What they’ve done is allowed a router to flip on it’s base to get vertical with a 1.5 degree tilt up so that when doing edge trimming you aren’t going to kill the top part. So you get both, trim edge or top. Just wondering what else it can do as a router, doubt it would replace but I’d sure push one to it’s limits… he! he! he! The site also offers lots of pics and nice video demonstration. See Festool site.
Freud are some of my best router bits! However I was a little disapointed after buying a selecton only to find out that they brought out a new really innovative quad blade, or Quadra-Cut as they call it. A small excerpt from their press release: “Two of the carbide cutters have an upshear angle to remove most of the stock. Then the pair of downshear cutters make a final cut to produce an ultra clean edge.” If any of you have used these let us know. You can read more here
If your the type of person that wants a tool that will probably outlive the life of your family pet, take a look at the Brute Tough (can’t quite figure out if there’s a space between the two!) line from Bosch, over the predecessors of this line, they claim: “The 15618 18V BruteTough hammer drill/driver, for example, runs 500 RPM faster, delivers 50 in/lbs more torque and offers a two-times increase in BPM compared to the Bosch 13618-2G it replaces.” See more on the press release and images in this combo kit. Let me know if you’ve see a review somewhere out there?
