I soooooooo hate cutting thick metal pipes with hack saw. The nightmare still comes to me when I was trying to remove my old oil tank to claim back some space. Only to realize the bastard intake pipes were wedged in on an angle. Only option was to make a big hole in exterior brick wall or hack the pipe. My variable speed reciprocating saw sure saved the day. As an alternative the Stout X-Band portable metal band saw is an interesting alternative if you don’t have to get into tight places.  ToolKing.com, provides a demonstration video including the cool base which you insert the thing into if you need a table.

easycoper.com

I’ve been looking at doing some moldings recently, I was interested in mixing a little victorian with modern in the house, wanted a room that gave a different feel. Well like many other projects I haven’t gotten around to it. But I ran across this cool little jig to cut copings, apparently it can be quite the job as most use a hand coping saw (little saw blade). However this simple jig, the EasyCoper, gives you the speed in using a powered jig saw.

The EasyCoper consists of two light-weight, plastic jigs (one left, the other right hand cuts). The really simple aid allows you to cut molding with a power jig saw instead of a coping saw. That means less wrist, hand and arm stress.

The web site with pics is here here… and direct jump to demo videos showing how it’s done here…

Vermont American easier product selection

I have to hand it to Vermont American for the clear packaging. I mean I have to do metal, metal and wood, sometimes just stainless, other times just wood and then some brick… I can’t keep up with cobalt, titanium dilithum crystal or kryptonite and what ever!!! They clearly state what each bit does on the packaging, that way I don’t spend the 3 hours a week at the hardware store… or spend it looking for other cool stuff.

High Speed Steel bits (left) show a large section of wood and a small section of metal to indicate these are best for wood drilling and light metal drilling. By comparison, a Titanium drill bit package (right) shows a large section of metal and some wood, helping the consumer understand this is the best bit for more frequent metal drilling and basic wood drilling. All packaging then clearly calls out the accessory size.

Not sure if you guys check out Cool Tools at all, but there’s lots of awesome ideas and to introduce you, think industrial bath soap holder and recessed to boot! I love recessed stuff, it’s out of the way and uses all that nice space between the 2×4s. Anyways he’s found this catalog that I’m just starting to investigate. Great site check it out…

Black & Decker Automatic Adjustable Wrench AAW100

Black & Decker is giving the adjustable wrench a design makeover. Looks almost like it would style with your Crocks, ya those ugly foam injected shoes. Nice thing is that you hit a button and it auto automatically adjusts to the bolt size… too bad the product demo shows only some Flash based eye candy and no actual instructions as I was rather curious if it also expands or you have to turn that little thumb thinger to get it back open for the next bolt size? Hmmmm.

  • Automatically adjusts to any size nut or bolt up to 1-1/4″ with the push of a button
  • Work in tight areas with the convenience of one-touch adjustment
  • Professional heat treated hardened steel and 220 ft-lbs. of torque are tough enough for any job
